Ford reveals more of its Mondeo at Paris Motor Show

At the Paris Motor Show, the firm said the Mondeo will be available as a five-door and wagon – uniquely developed for Europe – as well as a four-door that will be offered as a segment-first petrol hybrid electric vehicle, combining a specially-developed 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 35kW lithium-ion battery.   It will be the first car in its segment in Europe to be equipped with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, the 2012 “International Engine of the Year” 1.0-litre EcoBoost. An ECOnetic Technology model will also be available, powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine. The firm claimed both are expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy.   In addition, customers will have the choice of turbocharged 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines, and a 2.0-litre TDCi diesel. For the first time on Mondeo, a diesel all-wheel drive variant will be offered.   The all-new Mondeo…

'Nemesis' breaks electric car land speed record

A battery-powered car designed to “smash the boring, Noddy stereotype of the green car” broke the UK electric land speed record on Thursday.   The Nemesis, a Lotus Exige modified by utility company Ecotricity, reached 148mph near York this morning. It was driven by 21-year-old Nick Ponting, who started racing go-karts at the age of 12.   The previous record, of 137mph, was set by the grandson of racing legend Sir Malcolm Campbell, Don Wales, driving a Bluebird Electric in 2000. Wales attempted to break his own record in August 2011 but failed after the car hit a pothole on a beach in Wales.   Dale Vince, the founder of Ecotricity, said the company had built the Nemesis to “stimulate thought and debate about how we’ll be getting around when the world runs out of oil. And what we’ve been able to demonstrate is…

Nissan to unveil TeRRA fuel cell concept

The Nissan TeRRA SUV concept, to be unveiled on 27th September at the Paris Motor Show, introduces Nissan’s electric vehicle technology into the SUV vehicle class.   The 4X4 fuel cell electric powertrain provides the TeRRA SUV with equal ability to travel both on and off road, whilst producing no emissions – taking sustainable motoring into a new territory.   Nissan will build on their existing experience with SUV models, such as the Juke and Quashqai, and their knowledge gained from electric vehicles with the LEAF – however the TeRRA will be the first design to demonstrate Nissan’s advancement with fuel cell technology.   “Our challenge was to take Nissan’s strength in SUVs and crossovers forward into the zero-emissions era, fuel cells being our new frontier in zero emission mobility,” said Francois Bancon, Nissan’s division general manager of product strategy and planning.   Although TeRRA is presented…

Nissan deliver the new e-NV200

Nissan made a special delivery at the Commercial Vehicle International Motor Show in Hanover, Germany, this week: a special concept version of the battery-electric e-NV200 panel van that it’s been testing with FedEx since late last year.   The Japanese automaker, whose EV e-NV200 has the same 24-kWh battery and 80-kW motor as the Nissan Leaf, started testing the vehicle with FedEx in London last December and expanded that effort to Yokohama, Japan, this past summer.   Nissan plans to roll out zero emission technologies into its LCV line-up. The e-NV200 will be the second of four electric vehicles (EV) announced by Nissan to reach mass production, underlining Nissan’s leadership in the EV segment. The e-NV200 combines the advanced powertrain of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF with all the spaciousness, versatility, and practicality of the base vehicle-the NV200 multi-purpose compact van.   The e-NV200…

Twizy Fleet for Wales

A Welsh beauty spot is at the vanguard of a new eco travel network which is utilising a fleet of Renault Twizy electric vehicles to encourage visitors to cut their transport emissions.   The recently launched Eco Travel Network is offering visitors to the Brecon Beacons National Park the chance to explore the area in one of its six Twizy two-seater EVs. Powered by electricity generated by sun, rain and wind power, the vehicles are aimed at reducing the 50,000 tonnes of CO2 produced on average per year by visitors covering 300 miles during a one-week holiday.   Eco Travel Network founding director Alison Kidd said: ‘Most journeys in the UK are less than five miles but we do them in cars designed to go 500 miles at 70 mph.   ‘Changing attitudes starts with changing behaviour and the best way to trigger a…

Are Electric Car Government Grants Ineffective?

Government grants to drive the uptake of electric cars and vans are benefitting only a handful of motorists and may not be proving effective, MPs suggest.   Launching a new report from the Transport Select Committee on the Government’s plug-in vehicle strategy, committee chair Louise Ellman questioned whether the scheme was a good use of taxpayers’ cash.   She said: “Carbon emissions from transport must be reduced if the UK is to meet its climate change targets, but public money must be targeted on effective policies.   “So far, Department for Transport expenditure on plug-in cars – some £11 million – has benefited just a handful of motorists. We were warned of the risk that the Government is subsidising second cars for affluent households; currently plug-in cars are mostly being purchased as second cars for town driving.”   The latest figures available from the…
