The theory of the plug-in hybrid is that one car can give you enough battery power to cover your daily commute, while a convenient petrol engine can be relied on for additional weekend travel, or occasional longer journeys. The BMW 330e does just that, with a total combined range from a full tank and full charge of around 370 miles. Correcting tyre pressures could save you ££££s

A Yorkshire NHS Trust has been told it could save almost £22,000 per year on fuel by running its company car fleet with the correct tyre pressures. The finding was made at a Michelin event held by the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to test the pressures and condition of employees’ tyres. Results from the 75 cars tested showed that 49% of tyres were at the correct pressure – better than the national average of 28% – and a further 24% of tyres were classed as “acceptable”, meaning they were up to 7psi under-inflated. Technicians found 15 cars which had at least one tyre “dangerously” or “very dangerously” under-inflated. Not only do such tyres pose serious safety risks but they also cost fleets more in fuel. Aggregated across the whole 2,000-strong fleet at the Trust, the findings show that significant savings could…

Fleet managers should order duplicate livery to reduce repair downtime

Post-crash vehicle downtime costs fleets hundreds and even thousands of pounds a day and disrupts business effectiveness, but efficiencies can be significantly improved by ensuring duplicate car and van graphics are stocked by the livery supplier. Frequently, according to Tobin Jenkins, managing director of vehicle graphics and wrapping company Sign Language, vehicle wrapping and livery is the final item to be thought of when getting a vehicle back on the road following a road traffic crash. However, to help improve operating efficiencies for customers, Sign Language analyses their past 12 months’ crash statistics to determine vehicle damage “hotspots” across the fleet. Using the resulting data, a duplicate “repair kit” stock of vehicle wrapping and livery on a panel-by-panel basis will then be produced and held by Sign Language. It can then be dispatched to the vehicle repairer for same-day delivery if ordered before 1pm…

Islington Council have largest hybrid van fleet

Islington Council has purchased a further 29 hybrid vans, making it the largest local authority fleet of hybrid light commercial vehicles in the UK, with 66 hybrid vans in total.   The vehicles will reduce CO2 emissions by 33 tonnes and save the council an estimated £48,000 in diesel fuel over the next three years.   Chris Rutherford, fleet and depot manager at Islington Council, said: “Islington has been fully committed to greener purchasing for many years.   “With these hybrid vehicles we can green our fleet in a way that also reduces the burden on the public purse by lowering fuel spend.”   Islington was one of the pioneers in the use of hybrid vans, initially investing in eight Ashwoods vehicles back in 2009.   Rutherford added: “The vehicles perform well, reduce our fuel use and therefore save us money and lower our…

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid will meet new London Congestion Charge policy

With CO2 emissions of 48g/km, the Volvo V60 D6 AWD will still benefit from the newly confirmed Ultra Low Emission Discount (ULED) for London’s congestion charge scheme when the new limit of 75g/km of CO2 comes into force on July 1, 2013.   Recent announcements regarding taxation of diesel hybrid cars mean it will also continue to benefit from being in the lowest BIK tax band.   Recently confirmed by Transport for London, the current Greener Vehicle Discount and Electric Vehicle Discount will be replaced by the ULED and bring the CO2 eligibility of vehicles down from 100g/km to 75g/km.   This means that the Volvo V60 D6 AWD will still benefit from free* entry into London’s congestion charge zone as well as reduced parking fees in some areas, at the same time as attracting zero first year vehicle tax and zero annual vehicle…

Hydrogen powered vehicles set for UK introduction

Over one and a half million hydrogen powered vehicles could be on UK roads by 2030, according to the UKH2Mobility report on hydrogen vehicles.   The UKH2Mobility project – which brings together leading businesses from the automotive, energy, infrastructure and retail sectors with government – produced the report to provide a ‘roadmap’ for the introduction of vehicles and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in the UK.   Business and Energy Minister Michael Fallon said: “Securing new economic opportunities for the UK, diversifying our national energy supply and driving down carbon emissions go to the heart of my job in government.   “The findings of the report demonstrate hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles can have a real impact on all three.   “It is very positive that all the UKH2Mobility partners will be joining us in the next phase of the project where they will be…
